What is Kidney Disease? An expert explains

Kidney disease, also known as renal disease, refers to any condition or disorder that affects the structure or function of the kidneys. The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs located in the upper abdomen that perform vital functions in the body. They are responsible for filtering waste products, excess fluids, and toxins from the blood, regulating electrolyte levels, and producing hormones that control blood pressure and red blood cell production.

Kidney disease can encompass a range of conditions, including acute kidney injury (sudden and temporary loss of kidney function) and chronic kidney disease (progressive and long-term damage to the kidneys). Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is typically categorized into stages based on the level of kidney damage and the decrease in kidney function.

Types of Kidney Diseases

Acute kidney injury (AKI)
Acute Kidney Injury (AKI):

A sudden and often reversible loss of kidney function, often caused by dehydration, infections, medication toxicity, or other underlying health conditions.

Chronic kidney disease
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD):

A long-term condition in which the kidneys gradually lose function over time, often caused by high blood pressure, diabetes, or other underlying health conditions.

Glomerulonephritis
Glomerulonephritis:

An inflammation of the tiny filters (glomeruli) in the kidneys that can cause protein and blood to leak into the urine.

Polycystic kidney disease
Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD):

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD): A genetic condition in which fluid-filled cysts develop in the kidneys, leading to progressive loss of kidney function.

Nephrotic syndrome
Nephrotic Syndrome:

A condition in which the kidneys leak large amounts of protein into the urine, resulting in low levels of protein in the blood, swelling, and increased risk of infection.

Kidney stones
Kidney Stones:

Hard deposits of minerals and salts that form in the kidneys and can cause severe pain as they pass through the urinary tract.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs):

Infections of the bladder or kidneys that can cause pain, fever, and other symptoms.

Renal artery stenosis
Renal Artery Stenosis:

A narrowing of the arteries that supply blood to the kidneys, which can cause high blood pressure and kidney damage.

Pyelonephritis
Pyelonephritis:

An infection of the kidney, often caused by bacteria that have spread from the bladder.

Interstitial nephritis
Interstitial Nephritis:

An inflammation of the tissue between the kidney tubules, often caused by medications or autoimmune disorders.

Kidney Diseases can have various causes

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a condition in which the kidneys gradually lose function over time.

Some of the common causes include:

Diabetes: Diabetes is a leading cause of kidney disease. High blood sugar levels associated with diabetes can damage the blood vessels in the kidneys, leading to kidney damage and impaired function.

High Blood Pressure (Hypertension): Uncontrolled high blood pressure can put strain on the blood vessels in the kidneys, leading to kidney damage over time.

Glomerulonephritis: Glomerulonephritis is inflammation of the glomeruli, which are the filtering units of the kidneys. It can be caused by infections, autoimmune disorders, or other underlying conditions, and can result in kidney damage.

Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD): PKD is an inherited condition characterized by the growth of numerous fluid-filled cysts in the kidneys. These cysts can gradually enlarge and damage the kidneys, leading to kidney failure.

Urinary Tract Obstructions: Obstructions in the urinary tract, such as kidney stones, tumors, or structural abnormalities, can block the flow of urine and cause damage to the kidneys.

Infections: Severe or recurrent infections of the kidneys or urinary tract, such as kidney infections or chronic urinary tract infections, can cause kidney damage if left untreated.

Medications and Toxins: Certain medications and toxins, when used inappropriately or in high doses, can cause kidney damage. Examples include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), certain antibiotics, and some illicit drugs.

Autoimmune Diseases: Autoimmune disorders like lupus, vasculitis, and IgA nephropathy can cause inflammation and damage to the kidneys.

Genetic Factors: Some kidney diseases have a genetic component. Examples include Alport syndrome, cystinosis, and certain forms of glomerulonephritis.

Other Systemic Conditionss: Certain systemic conditions like systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), multiple myeloma, and amyloidosis can affect the kidneys and contribute to kidney disease.

Symptoms of Kidney Diseases

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) refers to the gradual loss of kidney function over time, often over a period of months or years. In the early stages of CKD, there may be few or no symptoms. However, as the condition progresses, the following signs and symptoms may become more noticeable:

Symptoms of Kidney Diseases

Fatigue and Weakness: As kidney function declines, you may feel more tired and lethargic, even with rest.

Swelling: As fluid accumulates in your body due to the kidneys' inability to remove excess water and salt, you may experience swelling in your feet, ankles, legs, or around your eyes.

Changes in Urination: You may experience changes in the frequency, amount, or appearance of your urine. You may also experience difficulty in urination or painful urination.

High Blood Pressure: Kidney disease can cause high blood pressure, and high blood pressure can also cause kidney disease.

Loss of Appetite and Weight Loss: You may lose your appetite and experience unintended weight loss due to the build-up of waste products in your body.

Nausea and Vomiting: As the waste products accumulate in your body, you may experience nausea and vomiting.

Anaemia: Decreased kidney function can cause a decrease in the production of red blood cells, leading to anaemia, which can cause fatigue, weakness, and shortness of breath.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you should speak to our doctor.

Early detection and treatment of kidney disease can help slow or even stop its progression.
