Alzheimer's disease is a progressive neurological disorder that causes memory loss and cognitive decline. It is the most common form of dementia, affecting an estimated 8.8 million people in INDIA. The exact cause of Alzheimer's is unknown, but it is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
The percentage of people with Alzheimer's dementia increases with age:
5.0% of people aged 65 to 74
13.1% of people aged 75 to 84
33.2% of people aged 85 and older
Alzheimer's Disease results from the abnormal accumulation of proteins in the brain. Two specific types of proteins, Plaque (amyloid protein) and Tangles (tau protein) are responsible for the demise of brain cells. Within the human brain, which comprises over 100 billion nerve cells and other supporting cells, these cells collaborate to enable functions such as thinking, learning, remembering, and planning.
Plaques: Amyloid proteins, which are fragments of a more significant protein, tend to aggregate and, in doing so, exhibit a detrimental impact on neurons, disrupting the communication between brain cells.
Tangles: Tau proteins have a role in supporting the internal transport system of brain cells, facilitating the movement of essential nutrients and materials. In Alzheimer's disease, tau proteins undergo structural changes and form neurofibrillary tangles, which can damage cells.
The symptoms of Alzheimer's can vary from person to person, but the most common include:
Memory Loss: The most noticeable and early symptom is difficulty remembering recently learned information or important dates and events.
Difficulty with Familiar Tasks: People with Alzheimer's may struggle to complete everyday tasks they've been doing for years, such as cooking a meal or dressing themselves.
Confusion: Individuals may become disoriented about time, place, and even people, making it challenging to recognize friends and family members.
Language Problems: Alzheimer's can lead to difficulties finding the right words, following or joining in on conversations, or repeating themselves.
Poor Judgment: People with Alzheimer's may make uncharacteristic or poor decisions in everyday situations.
Mood and Personality Changes: This can include becoming irritable, anxious, or depressed. Personality changes may also manifest, such as becoming withdrawn or suspicious.
Misplacing Items: Frequently, people with Alzheimer's disease tend to place items in unconventional locations and encounter difficulties in retracing their actions to locate them.
Loss of Initiative: They may become less interested in participating in activities or hobbies they previously enjoyed.
Mild: This is the earliest stage of the disease. People in the mild stage may have mild memory loss and difficulty with thinking and concentration. They may also have trouble with simple tasks, such as balancing a checkbook or planning a meal.
Moderate: This stage is characterised by more pronounced memory loss and cognitive decline. People in the moderate stage may have difficulty remembering recent events, following directions, or making decisions. They may also need help with bathing, dressing, and toileting.
Severe: This is the most advanced stage of Alzheimer's. People in the severe stage may lose all ability to communicate and interact with their surroundings. They may also need help with all aspects of their daily care.
Ayurveda is a holistic system of medicine that originated in India over 5,000 years ago. It views the body as a whole and treats disease by balancing the Tri-Doshas: Vata (wind), Pitta (Bile), and Kapha (Phlegm). Ayurveda has been used to treat Alzheimer's for centuries, and there is some evidence to suggest that it can be effective in slowing the progression of the disease.
There are several reasons why you might choose Ayurveda for Alzheimer's. First, Ayurveda is a holistic approach to medicine that treats the whole person, not just the disease. This can be beneficial for people with Alzheimer's, who often experience a variety of symptoms, including physical, emotional, and cognitive problems.
Second, Ayurveda is a natural approach to medicine that does not have the side effects of many conventional medications. This can be important for people with Alzheimer's, who are often taking multiple medications.
Third, there is some evidence to suggest that Ayurveda can be effective in slowing the progression of Alzheimer's. A study published in the journal "Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine" found that people with Alzheimer's who took an Ayurvedic herbal formula for 12 weeks showed significant improvement in their cognitive function compared to those who took a placebo.
